still about 45 minutes to go until sunrise. traffic moving pretty good so far in tysons corner. 76 at lunch time. 80 degrees by 5:00. high maybe 4:00 or so 82, 83. another very nice day, just a touch more humidity than yesterday but still very manageable. it's quiet overhead tonight. one thing we're looking at is a little bit of fog as i said with temperatures close to the 50-degree mark in frederick. manassas down to warrenton and culpeper low 50s. a touch of fog as well. we're sitting at 63 going into the low 80s. it's 6:00 a.m. here comes monika. not nearly as good news. unfortunately i don't. especially on the north side of town and on the beltway. look at all the red behind me and the accident on the outer loop of the beltway right here before georgia avenue. i'm stepping out to show what you it looks like from our sky 9. you see the equipment on the scene. crews there tell us there are at least two cars involved in

the accident. you're squeezing by to the right to get by. this is again a live look from our sky 9. looks like it may be moving o. some good news here. you're watching it live. looks like some of the activity is still sitting right there on the right shoulder. beltway outer loop just reopened within the last few seconds. let's take a look at the beltway outer loop. this is what it looks like at route 29. that's going to be one long slow lineup. now over to virginia on the northbound side of 95. this is incident free close into springfield. delays forming leaving route 644. i'll be back with more traffic at 6:12. at the top of the hour, we're following breaking news out of the middle east. protests at a third u.s. embassy this morning. >> people in the capital of yemen stormed the american embassy there this morning. this follows protests yesterday in libya and in egypt. kristin fisher is live in our satellite center with more on some deadly violence. kristin? >> reporter: right now a mass

protest under way right outside the u.s. embassy in yemen's capital. so far it has not turned violent. no reports of any injuries but we've all seen how quickly that can change after what happened outside the u.s. consulate in libya just two days ago. i want you to take a look at this video. it's just come in within the last hour. protesters are on the embassy grounds. you can see that. they're trying to jump over the fence but so far they have not been able to actually enter the building that houses the diplomatic offices. what they have done is removed the embassy sign on the outer wall and they've taken down the u.s. flag and burned it. but again so far no reports of any injuries. according to the yemen times, these protesters say they will not leave until the american who made the anti-islam film is executed. that film also appeared to be the catalyst for those similar protests in egypt and libya, but now the f.b.i. is investigating the possibility that the deadly assault on the u.s. consulate in libya was a planned

terrorist attack intended to mark the anniversary of 9/11. here is secretary of state senator clinton followed by president obama. >> how could this happen in a country we helped liberate, in a city we helped save. >> make no mistake. we will work with the libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people. >> my name is chris stevens, and i'm the new u.s. ambassador to libya. >> reporter: the obama administration has started the search for the people who killed ambassador stevens and the three other state department officers killed in tuesday's attack. they're bringing in the marines, unmanned drones and two warships armed with cruise missiles. they're taking position just off the libyan coast. the situation escalating rapidly. i will be monitoring it throughout the next half-hour and bring you an update at 6:30. >> we'll see you then, kristin live in our satellite center this morning. the film behind all of

these protests is called "innocence of muslims." it's an amateur movie made in california. it portrays the prophet muhammad as a fool and has sexually explicit situations in it. it was posted on july 1. two months later it was aired on an egyptian talk show. the film maker goes by the fake name sam bacile. steve cline was a consultant on the film and talked to cbs about his role. >> i could not have done a better job than what i've done to point out to the people of the world and the vast majority of the muslims just how dangerous these people are. people have asked me, do i have blood on my hands? no, i don't. the blood is on their hands, not mine. >> youtube has pulled clips of this movie from its site in egypt and libya. we'll continue to follow that part of the story as well. our coverage of this story continues on wusa9.com. you can see a foe foe gal --

see a photo gallery there of the four americans killed and get reaction from the local diplomatic community and learn the latest on the hunt for the killers in lybia. all that and more right now on wusa9.com. the former campaign treasurer d.c. councilman michael brown is firing back. an attorney for that treasurer calls brown, quote, morley deprived and he denies stealing money from brown's campaign. the at large councilman claimed former treasurer ha creek sutton was involved in $100 thown that went missing. sutton says he's being set up as the fall guy. a follow-up now about the montgomery county police cruisers and their steering problem. authorities tell 9news eight of the 289 police cars they've checked out had problems. in two separate incidents, officers turned the steering wheel on their crown vics but the car kept going straight. mechanics plan to have the remaining cars inspected sometime this weekend.

it will start at $199. the iphone 4s drops to $99 with a contract and the iphone 4 will be free. but does the phone live up to all that hype? "the wall street journal" reports there are some disappointed folks out there. the phone does not come with certain features that have become popular on some androids. for example, tapping your phone to pay something, tapping phones to share information, facial recognition and wireless charging. and speaking of cords, if you want to use your old iphone accessories, you're going to have to shell out $30 for an adapter. that's because the new version of the apple phone has a smaller 8 pin dock connector instead of the traditional 30 pin connector. what is it with people and their cell phones you may be asking? why do people like me talk about them all the time? the reasonable, our culture has become obsessed with the smartphone. a study from the company called lookout found nearly 60% of

howard here with your weather first. noontime temps mid-70s. highs 82, maybe 83 with a 5:00 p.m. temperature of a nice 80. on the outer loop of the beltway right before georgia avenue, a multivehicle accident has been cleared, but look at what it left for you early in the morning. oh, my goodness. it's three miles or more on the outer loop westbound 495. of course the north side of town through silver spring, boy, oh boy, that is really tough. but at least the lanes are open. i'll keep you posted on that situation again coming up in my next report at 6:18. but first, the first year for a teenage driver is the most dangerous on the roads. they're not only inexperienced but also distracted by cell

phones and texting. with me today for the extra mile is state farm agent kenya here to talk about a different approach to engaging teens on the importance of safe driving. thanks so much for joining us. >> good morning. >> before we get into the campaign, why is it so necessary to focus on that first year? >> we have found at state farm the first year is actually the most dangerous for teens. they get into too many accidents. as you may know, fatalities are actually one of the issues for teens. >> i have teenagers of my own. it's so tough just the thought of them being on the road. i tried scare tactics. you say there's a different approach. >> the scare tactics actually don't work. so we're looking at a more positive approach. that's why we are having this event. it's more about engaging the kids, making it a more positive experience so they do become better drivers. they think about not texting while driving or answering the phone while they're driving. >> we have a graphic of some

suggestions. when you say a positive approach, give me an example, especially where adults are involved. >> exactly. parents are actually -- should be very involved in their kids' driving experience. one of the things we found out is that parents talk to kids about driving before they actually start driving and once they start driving, they stop having those conversations. it's very important that parents continue to be engaged. >> conversation needs to continue throughout the process and beyond. tell us about the campaign. it's a great one. >> it is. it's going to be this saturday at tysons corner. it's going to be right outside the mall, macy's mall. we're going to have lots of fun activities for the kids. there's going to be a driving simulator, lots of giveaways and lots of fun things are going to happen. >> there's something bigger, a big grant you're giving to an area high school. tell us about that. >> you go on the website celebratemydrive.com and note vote for your favorite school. the school that gets the most votes will get $100,000 for

the evening, you're going to love t72 degrees. -- love it, 72 degrees. fog a concern. we're down to a mile in warrenton, culpeper a mile and a quarter. patchy fog as worst. most areas are looking pretty good. temperatures as i said running in the 50s. although lovettsville is down to 49. 55 up in rockville. out to our west centreville 53. alexandria 56. bowie 52. outside on our michael & son weather cam, look at the eastern sky glowing there out of tysons corner this morning. traffic looking like it's still moving along pretty well in that part of the world. cold front slicing across the northern plains and the central plains. you can see the showers here from around wisconsin back toward albuquerque, north of the boundary temperatures in the 30s this morning. south of the boundary 60s and even some 70s out there. so we're on the warm side of the equation now with high pressure pulling away. that means our winds turn more

southeast than southerly. that will bring ath more humidity and maybe -- bring a little more humidity and maybe a shower. quiet tonight a. patch or two of fog could return. tomorrow we watch that front coming into western pennsylvania and the middle part of the afternoon. cumberland west might see a shower. we may see a stray sprinkle on the eastern shore. we'll be relatively quiet, though, for the evening hours on friday. here comes that front, though. overnight friday night into saturday morning, can't rule out a stray shower but there's not a lot of moisture to work with so look like our rain chances stay low right through the weekend picking up some early next week. next three days great today, 83. tonight we're back down in the 60s in town with some 50s north and west and that patch of fog. tomorrow looks nice, too, 83 with a few more clouds. saturday pleasant, 79. sunday exciting to see 77 there. then by later monday into tuesday, rain chances pick up with the next front. highs by wednesday may stay in

the low 70s. fall like coming our way. 6:17. here comes monika with timesaver traffic. it's been ugly in spots. >> it really has. i'm glad that one of us has good news this morning. that would not be me. on the outer loop of the beltway we started off this morning's rush hour really, really rough. it was two to three-car vehicle accident on the outer loop of the beltway right here before georgia avenue. it's been cleared but let's take a look at the delay from our mdot camera on the outer loop. actually this is from sky 9 on the outer loop. we've got about a three to four- mile backup through silver spring trying to get in toward georgia avenue. again the good news is that the lanes are open. the bad news is that the damage here is double. i'm so sorry -- is done. i'm so sorry about that. if you're planning to head here, give yourself the extra time. you will need to deal with it. let's go to the other side of town. if you're planning to head northbound on 95, this is incident free. you have your normal slow traffic dale city toward woodbridge and again as you leave norton, newington and

welcome back. 6:22 this thursday morning. a touch of fog in frederick and toward the warrenton, culpeper areas. otherwise a nice morning. on the cool side but comfortable. our day planner calling for another sunny day. we have a temperature by noon up to 76. gorgeous lunch hour, recess. 80 at 3:00. high about 82, 83 with a 6:00 p.m. reading of 78. in sports, the nationals have a well deserved day off today. >> they start a three-game series with the braves tomorrow in atlanta. their lead right now in the nl east eight and a half games. >> john lannan got his first start since taking stephen strasburg's spot in the rotation. he and desmond went owe eeon desmond went deep in the 8th. nats shut out the mets 2-0 and sweep the series. up in baltimore, check out the

gorgeous day out there. satellite and radar once again quiet but out through the ohio and tennessee valleys, starting to see a few clouds there. probably will see a few more clouds around tomorrow but still a decent friday. this morning we're down to 48 in frederick. 50 culpeper while we sit at 63. with the cooler temperatures, we've had a little bit of fog form. visibility in frederick about a quarter mile. in the mountains petersburg with one half-mile visibility but a great day ahead. high temperatures under sunny skies will top out in the low 80s. let's check in with monika samtani. weather near perfect but traffic far from it. far from it is right. huge story of the monk is the beltway north of town in silver spring. this accident was here on the outer loop before georgia avenue for only a short time, but take a look at what it's done to traffic from our sky 9. on the outer loop of the beltway, this is before new hampshire avenue. one solid backup coming off 95 from at least route 212 down to the outer loop and across the top side of the beltway before

georgia avenue where the activity remains on the right shoulder. but your main lines are open. this is the height of our morning rush hour and that's what it does to traffic. in fact, let's take a live look from our chart camera. if you look right there, you see all that white, the lights there. that's the beltway as well in college park coming around the bend from route 1 to 95 and again one long slow lineup. if you're just heading out the door, you know what to expect. let's grow to our graphics once again. marc camden line 841 is running 20 minutes late. i'll be back with more traffic coming up at 6:43. back to you. at 6:41 we have breaking news out of the midz east. protest -- middle east. protesters have stormed a third u.s. embassy. this is video from yemen this morning. hundreds of depend strat straighters -- demonstrators stormed the american embassy. the american embassy had warned them there to expect violence. our partners at cbs this morning are following the

story. let's go live to charlie rose who joins us from new york. good morning. >> good morning, mike and andre ya. the latest on the situation in yemen and cjar;oe d just arrived in -- and our charlie d 'agata has just arrived in the area. we'll also talk about degreat preparation monday -- debate preparation and more. kristin fisher is tracking the latest developments as well. she is live this morning in our satellite center trying to keep up to date with everything that's happening. kristin, over to you. >> reporter: that's right. so far those protests outside the u.s. embassy in yemen have not turned violent. no reports yet of any injuries. we know how quickry those things can change after what happened just two days ago outside the u.s. consulate in libya, especially when you

think that yemen is of course the home to al qaeda's most active branch. so things can escalate very quickly. this is the video of the he protesters outside the -- of the protesters outside the embassy grounds. they have removed the sign on the outer wall and taken down the u.s. flag and burned it. but so far they have not entered the building that houses the diplomatic offices. again no reports of any injuries. according to the yemen times, these protesters say they will not leave until the american who made that anti-islam film is executed. that film also appeared to be the catalyst for the similar protests in egypt and libya. the u.s. embassy in cairo expressed regret that an american made film insuperintendented muslims. it was a move -- insulted muslims. it was a prove that presidential candidate mitt romney called disgraceful. >> the statement that came from the administration was a statement which is akin to an apology. >> governor romney seems to have a tendency to shoot first

and name later. and as president, one of the things i've learned is you can't do that. >> reporter: the president has now started the search for the people who killed ambassador stevens and those three other state department officers. the u.s. is now sending in the marines, 50 of them to the u.s. embassy in libya. they're bringing in unmanned drones over libya and also brought two warships armed with cruise missiles which are taking position off the libyan coast. now the f.b.i. is actually investigating whether or not the attack two days ago on the u.s. consulate in libya, they're investigating if possibly it was actually a planned terrorist attack and not just an impromptu attack by those protesters. mike? >> thank you, kristin, kristin fisher tracking the developments in our satellite center this morning. the nation will pay tribute to neil armstrong. there will be a memorial service at the washington national cathedral. it starts at 10:00 this

morning. nasa administrator charles bolden will be there. so will michael collins, armstrong's crew mate on the apollo 11 mission. armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. he died back on august 25th. a follow-up this morning to our story on toll cheaters in maryland. we told you yesterday that maryland sends notices to people who go through ez pass lanes without a transponder, but the state can't go after those people. now a state delegate in annapolis wants to create a hall of shame, a listing of people who owe thousands in outstanding fines. democrat james malone wants to change state law so maryland can go after those toll cheaters. he'll bring up a new bill next year. montgomery county is no longer charging late fees for people who don't pay speed camera or red light camera tickets. the washington examiner reports a judge ruled the fees may violate the state's constitution. that's because the county doesn't charge the same late

fee as other cities and counties. the late fees brought in an extra $1.8 million last year. another beaver infected with rabies went on the attack in fairfax county. a group of kids were at the hidden pond nature center saturday when a beaver went after them. an animal control officer shot the animal before it bit anyone. last week an 83-year-old woman was bitten by a rabid beaver while swimming in lake barcroft. animal control authorities tracked down and killed several beavers. they all tested positive for rabies. we asked authorities why is this a growing problem. >> it's too soon to make that kind of assessment or statement that something is going on but certainly when these types of things happen, we do take a look and make note of them. >> on sunday a rabid raccoon turned up in the same neighborhood. police believe the infected raccoons are biting the beavers and they're warning everyone to be careful and keep an eye on your pet. coming up on 6:37, jessica

doyle is here with another your money report. >> she says more and more of us have health insurance these days. why is that? >> more people are able to actually go to the doctor and pay for it using health insurance. that's because the number of uninsured americans has declined for the first time in four years. the census bureau says more than 260 million people have some sort of health care coverage in 2011. that's up four million from the year before and that means more than 84% of americans are now insured. a couple of reasons why here. more health insurance from the government, more people are getting that. and more young adults are insured because of the 2010 affordable care act. the most fattening item at mcdonald's is not the big mac, not even close. it's the big breakfast with hot cakes and large biscuit, over 1100 calories. that's about twice the big mac and that will be obvious in the future. mcdonald's will start posting calorie information on all of its menus starting monday.

a new regulation could force all fast food chains to post calories by next year. some people really hate pennies and a business owner in vermont hates beenies -- pennies so much, he's banning them. prices haven't changed. you'll still find tags that say 99 or the like but power play sports is rounding the change to the nearest nickel in the customer's favor. the owner says he hopes the u.s. government will follow his and canada's lead when it comes to dumping the penny. it costs two and a half times more to produce the penny than it's actually worth. >> i know. it's funny that it's still kicking around. >> inflation. if you got rid of it, you would see 4% inflation like that. people would raise their prices. >> interesting. >> and gas is one of those big things. >> it's not like they're going to round it down, you know. >> thanks, jess. >> we want to update ow a breaking news story -- on a breaking news story. >> u.s. embassy in germany has been evacuated because of an envelope that's arrived there. >> we do know that embassies

it's 6:43 and 63 degrees. you're going to need to know about this. there was an early morning accident on the outer loop before georgia avenue. it didn't take crews very long to clear it up but look at all this red. college park, i smile only because i feel bad. on the outer loop it extends from college park to silver spring. it's affected 95 jammed trying to get on to the outer loop as well. let's take a live look from our

sky 9. this is the beltway in silver spring. they were looking for another accident as well on the outer loop at university boulevard. i don't think they found anything. if they did, it might be on the shoulder but again very, very tough situation here on the beltway. let's also take a live look at 270 southbound. you have off and on delays route 85 toward 109 and 121. then a little bit more leaving falls road to the spur. and back to our graphics. interesting situation. marc camden 841, a tree fell across the track so it terminates in greenbelt. you'll transfer to 843. eight going to add at least 30 minutes to your ride on the marc camden line. i'll be back in a few minutes with more on the situation on the outer loop. but before i go, i have a commuter alert. a new law enforcing something you should already know. starting october 1 in maryland, it will be state law that you must come to a complete stop when the traffic light is out. we all dealt with this after the derecho in june where it

was every driver for himself at a dark intersection. starting october 1, when you come to a light that's out, people driving in every direction must stop. you have to yield to pedestrians and you must stay stopped till it's safe to go through the intersection. if you break the law, you'll be hit with a $90 ticket and two points on your license. if you cause an accident, it will be $130 and i believe three points. i feel like a broken record. every time the lights are out i say treat it as a four-way stop. it's now a law. >> it seems like something that would have been law for years. >> exactly. he knows the law and he also knows weather. >> it's going to be another really nice day. we'll have good weather right through the weekend. a slight chance for a shower friday night, early saturday. other than that, rain chances stay low till early next week. our bus stop forecast, we're watching a patch or two of fog north and west of d.c. this morning. temps in the 50s to low 60s out there. so it's just a few degrees warmer than it has been. sun coming up here in just a

moment or two in the next couple of minutes. outside as you look at the day planner, you're seeing bright skies. 76 at noon. by 5:00 80. i think around 4:00 or so, 3:30, 4:00 we'll top out at 82, 83. the fog i'm talking about up in frederick, visibility one quarter after mile. culpeper to regard renton we're running -- warrenton we're running half to three-quarters there. a little haze in manassas at three miles visibility. temps nice, in the 50s. easton 56. 57 at the patuxent river naval air station. frederick is 48. few exceptions there in the 40s. winchester currently 52 and culpeper with the fog at 50. outside on our michael & son weather camera, we've got generally clear skies this morning. it's looking good here in northwest d.c. 63, clear skies, calm winds. the humidity at 81%. dew points crept up to 57. a couple mornings ago the dew points were in the 40s when the air was really, really dry.

east coast is quiet. front west of chicago going to head toward them with rain today. traveling through chicago, there may be some delays from that. you'll notice the cloudiness coming up through the south through the tennessee valley. that's increased moisture. those clouds, a few of them anyway will be around here tomorrow. today a relatively quiet day. a patch of fog this morning. a shower toward norfolk virginia beach late this afternoon. we may see a sprinkle in the mountain. quiet again with the return of patchy fog. then on friday, can't rule out some isolated showers far west in the afternoon and also on the eastern shore. but we're really going to have to wait for this front. the thing about this front, it's going to put some showers down in the mountains friday evening. as it comes across the mountains, not a lot of moisture to work w. the front comes through generally dry saturday morning. so saturday ends up being a nice, sunny day with temperatures also in the upper 70s to near 80. we've been in good shape here this week. today no exception, 83. tonight about 64 in town with some 50s north and west, a patch of fog.
